Personal Insights

Sijjin 3: Khandar Ya’od: It isn’t only a horror movie, but puts forth a distressing twist to the love-a love that goes loathsome and grotesque because of betrayal and jealousy. The Islamic occult features in the film, the recitation of Quran and talisman, add a zing to it that is hardly present in any of the horror films. So the scares are uncomfortable, yes where imageries, the environmental sound as well as the character’s mental agony is used instead of a deluge of cheap fright tactics.

Torchbearers of Turkish horror will find the instance with Sijjin 3 interesting as it incorporates common elements (tragedy, adoration, wrath) and noticeable Turkish otherworldly superstitions.

Cultural Significance

The Sijjin series stands out in particular for the incorporation of Islamic and Turkish cultural components into the horror genre, during which they have abandoned the typical western stylistic elements dominant in the industry. The film deals with subjects such as black magic, curses and the life after death which are considered quite taboo in most of the societies.

Universal themes of love and loss in Sijjin 3 serve as a redemption to focus on the family torn apart — this makes it more thematically complex than a standard slasher horror movie. It is an example of how the Turkish film industry has moved on, expanding its horizons and getting noticed internationally.
