Personal Insights
If there is someone who is ever in doubt that the media plays an important role in playing up a narrative, they should watch this documentary, and believe me, they will never doubt again. Jam Master Jay has been credited with founding the group, and according to this video, it is only appropriate that he is given the title of a ‘pioneer’ for he has started something which only eight other people in his country achieved. Combine that with Jay’s unfortunate demise and you get a narrative that would sell.
Cultural Significance
Let’s look first at the substance of his killing. Why was Jam Master Jay’s murder on the list above? He really was a central figure in the history of hip humanity. All the unthinkable violence that exists in the genre has manifested in the life of Jay; indeed, his demise itself is a case of bias against all rap culture. Such a gruesome end to the life of someone engaged with such an influential figure in the rap culture is tragic. That’s why this film is breathtaking quite as a tribute to the man, but rather as a reminder to all involved of the need to seek justice.
