Insidious

Insidious

Insidious (2010) is an exceptional supernatural horror film and perhaps the most terrifying haunted house tale in modern cinema. Like its predecessors, Saw, this movie forsakes the gore and focuses on the atmosphere, delivering psychological dread instead. His trademark is thriller, and he does it again here.

It’s not just what haunts the house—it’s what waits on the other side.

Synopsis

Relocating with their children brings fresh excitement to Josh and Renai Lambert’s life, yet this quickens to a more terrifying pace when their son, Dalton degenerates into a puzzling coma. Coupled with doctors lacking an explanation and odd supernaturally horrific occurrences plaguing them over time, the Lamberts seem doomed to experience terror on every front.

There is a catch: it isn’t the house that is haunted; it is Dalton.

As it turns out, hibernating assists him in reaching astral projection, which ultimately results in him being able to operate in a liminal space known for housing damps and forlorn souls. The issue lies in him getting ‘lost’ too deep in a region termed, ‘The Further’, which poses a direct threat to life, and its a purpose – to take his body as a gateway to the world of the livings.

In a race against time, the family actually must turn to paranormal investigators that assist them to confront the remaining dark secrets of their own reality. In the end, they need to battle the spirit world to free Dalton.

Personal Insights

An example of a horror film that gets under your skin and stays there is Insidious. This film does not rely on carnage; instead, it uses the frightening aspects of the unseen. The score is haunting and terrifying, the images are captivating, and the narrative is refreshingly unique, yet in a strangely emotional way.

Additionally, this film helped redefine a genre during the 2010’s and helped pave the way for the Conjuring series, Sinister, and Hereditary films which focus on silence, sound, and story just as much as they do on fear and terror.

Final Word

This film isn’t just scary; it’s smart scary. Insidious toys with the most primal fears of sleep, death, and the unknown. The type of horror that doesn’t scream into your ear but rather whispers softly. Then stares at you from the shadows.
