Synopsis & Insights:
In the Heights is an animated and lively musical picture with the music and aspirations of the caring ensemble. Taking place in a Latino neighborhood known as Washington Heights of New York, the film focuses on Usnavi de la Vega (Anthony Ramos), the owner of a bodega who aspires to go back to the Dominican Republic to restore his father’s business. Rising temperatures in summer spur the hopes, the problems as well as the emotions of the habitants in the locals.
Anthony Ramos took center as Usnavi and provided an insipid yet charming performance. He encapsulates the portrayal of a man who is young but is unable to leave the confines of his community that limits him or still be able to escape and seek a new life. There is also romantic component in the film that is developed through the relationship of Vanessa whom Barrera plays and Usnavi played by Ramos. Ramos adds so much to the character of Vanessa stressing on her goals of being a fashion designer.
Be it Leslie Grace’s Nina Rosario or Curtis Hawkins’ Benny, Nina embarks on another major storyline as she returns back home from Stanford questions of self-doubt in her future – and Benny, who is also working under her father Kevin Rosario (portrayed by Jimmy Smits), has eyes on her. Such development of them two encumbers the reasons and as well the limitations that are consistent with the young people’s ambitions and family expectations.
Olga Merediz discloses her female character, Abuela Claudia, whom she performed in the musical and was nominated for a Tony Award. She is the wise woman in the neighborhood and the presence of charity. One of the highlights of the film is her interpretation of the song “Paciencia y Fe” depicting the frustration and everyday strain of immigrants fighting for a greener pasture.
This is in the Heights movie directed by Jon M. Chu. The movie is an adaptation of the Tony award winner music made by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and it is all about culture and community and following your dreams.
