Personal Insights
In my opinion, one of the best features of the film is its every day’s blending of family rituals which appears enticing on the surface but in reality is a difficult task as one has to attempt to integrate two completely different cultures and customs and that can be quite cumbersome to accomplish on the screen and the film bulrushes this premise quite effortlessly. Let’s also note the undertones of humour that is situational and also provided due to character traits particularly, Denzel Whitaker and Porscha Coleman where their acting and the role of a newly married couple seemed to fit within the boundaries of realism. Other seasoned actresses Jackée Harry and Valarie Pettiford served as the comedic elements of the film as they portrayed the role of mothers in the family.
Cultural Significance
Evidently, This film speaks volumes to many couples who are trying to manage their responsibilities toward their parents and at the same time try to nurture their own traditions. It brings family together, involves complex communication attempts, and the chaos that comes with the merging of families’ during the festive season. The film’s originality is further enhanced by its wide range of characters and simple but engaging plot hence it is a great movie to add in this era of holiday movies.
