Production Notes & Behind the Scenes

  • Director: Stephen Herek, internationally recognized as the director of such family-oriented films as The Mighty Ducks and 101 Dalmatians (1996), has the necessary experience in combining comedy and warmth as well.
  • Writer:Hailey DeDominicis presents a fun and amusing script, sprinkled with amusing conversations, family gatherings where everyone is uncomfortable, and overbearing family holiday customs. It was based, it seems, on her memories of Christmas with awkward relatives.
  • Filming Locations: The story was filmed in Utah in order to take advantage of the winter snapshots since the picturesque landscape of small towns coupled with Christmas decorations burst the log cabins was shot and snow-covered streets were like the Oklahoma twinkling lights.

Character Dynamics

Avery and Logan: The chemistry of this couple is what moves the story. The progression of hatred into acceptance comes across as complicated in the film – a combination of comical situations interspersed with deep insights. Avery’s many neuroses encouraging perfectionism are complemented by Lindsay Lohan, while moments of weakness in Logan are hidden behind an easygoing personality which is portrayed by Ian Harding.

The Morgan Family: Erica played by Kristin Chenoweth is a top performer, providing the family with both sharp comedic moments and genuine affection as its ‘glue’. Siblings Jon Rudnitsky and Katie Baker are also quite good in the roles of eccentric siblings who unwittingly hook up their spouses with the past.

Supporting Cast: Tim Meadows as Stan, a quirky family friend captures attention with his hilarious roles in several multitudes throughout the film. Judy Reyes in the role of Margaret, the strict and hardworking homemaker provides more complexity to the Morgan family home.

Themes Explored

  • Reconnecting with the Past: The film delves into the bittersweet nature of revisiting an old romance, showcasing how time changes people and relationships.
  • Family Dynamics: With its sprawling Morgan family and their differing personalities, the film portrays the joy and chaos of being surrounded by loved ones during the holidays.
  • Holiday Magic: Amidst the snowball fights, twinkling Christmas lights, and festive caroling, the film leans heavily into the idea that the holiday season is a time for second chances and unexpected surprises.

Critical Reception

As much as Our Little Secret has garnered a polarized response, it seems that quite a number of its viewers like the warm, gentle feeling of nostalgia that the movie invokes and how it plays out like a typical holiday rom-com. Some critiques also cite clichés and weaknesses concerning character arcs. A significant portion of consumers within the genre however, maintain that both the tone of the film and the holiday theme contribute positively to the enjoyment of the film, especially for those who want to be immersed in a holiday atmosphere.
